You Won’t Believe How Many Employees Fall for This Scam!

Let’s not sugarcoat it, the urgency of the phishing scam issue is increasing. They are getting harder to spot, and more are getting through, a lot more.

CLICKING THE WRONG LINK? IT’S HAPPENING A LOT.

Last year, the number of employees clicking on phishing links tripled. That’s not a typo.

Employees are falling for 3x more phishing scams.

We’re talking about dodgy emails that appear to be from trusted sources, fake Microsoft login pages that mimic the real ones, scam ads in Google searches that lead to malicious websites… the lot.

And when someone falls for one? The damage isn’t just digital. We’ve seen businesses lose access to critical files, deal with data breaches, and spend hours (if not days) untangling the mess.

SO WHAT’S GOING ON?

For starters, phishing is no longer just happening in email inboxes. Scammers are slipping links into search results, social media ads, comment sections, and even text messages, basically anywhere someone might click without thinking.

They’re also getting better at it. Some of these fake login pages? They’d fool even the most switched-on employee.

And with platforms like Microsoft 365 holding a goldmine of business data, it’s no wonder attackers are zeroing in.

HERE’S THE REAL ISSUE: FATIGUE.

When your team is seeing constant attempts, it’s easy to tune out. Click the link, log in, and move on.

Until it’s too late.

That’s why phishing is working. Not because people are careless, but because they’re overwhelmed.

WHAT CAN YOU DO ABOUT IT?

Well, training’s a solid start. And we don’t just mean a one-off reminder like an email to the team or PowerPoint at your next team meeting, but proper, regular cyber security awareness that keeps the threat at the top of your mind.

Then, back that up with tools that do some of the heavy lifting, like multi-factor authentication, password managers, and automatic patching.

Basically, make it harder for scammers to win and easier for your team to spot red flags.

The best time to secure your business was yesterday. The second-best? Right now.

We help businesses across Norfolk and beyond tighten their security and stay one step ahead of the bad guys. It’s all part of the support and service we offer.

Drop us a message, and let’s talk.

Apprentice Levy Allowance: Businesses, Quick, The Clock is Ticking

If you are a company paying a Levy into the Government Apprenticeships fund you are probably aware that you need to spend it all before the end of the financial year otherwise you lose it!

Don’t let that happen. If you need help to setup any of your staff on an apprenticeship before the time runs out, just give us a call and we can help you.

Team members don’t need to be new starters to do an apprenticeship, use the scheme to upskill existing staff and enhance their knowledge and practical abilities for your business.

If you are a non-Levy paying business you can do the same!  It costs either £0 or 5% of the cost depending on your exact circumstances, and we can help you find that out.  The 5% will still only equate to a few £100 spread across 15 months so it is really affordable training and development for your team.

MTC Event in Coventry: Insights, Debate, and Exciting Opportunities

Earlier this month, our Managing Director, Will Bridgman and Founder Owner, Richard Bridgman headed to the MTC (Manufacturing Technologies Centre) in Coventry for a major industry event. The trip followed a late night in Cambridge, entertaining potential clients with exciting project opportunities for Warren. The previous day had also been packed with activity, as Will followed up on defence sector contacts in Norwich, culminating in a meeting with the Defence Minister – a key step in Warren’s growing involvement in the sector.

What is the MTC?

The MTC provides transformative manufacturing advice to businesses across the UK, helping to drive innovation, efficiency and sustainability in the industry. The event brought together manufacturers from across the country, providing valuable networking opportunities and discussions on the future of UK manufacturing.

Will Bridgman on the Sustainability Panel

Will was invited to take part in a panel discussion in the auditorium, covering sustainability in manufacturing—a subject that is becoming increasingly critical to businesses and policymakers alike. The panel featured Henrik Von Scheel, a highly respected thought leader in the field, as the keynote speaker.

A heated debate on renewable energy

One of the memorable moments of the day came when Will and Henrik clashed on the topic of solar panels and wind energy. The debate became quite intense, with strong words exchanged as both defended their perspectives. However, after a lively discussion Henrik ultimately conceded to Will’s points – a testament to Will’s deep knowledge and passion for the topic.

The discussions continued into the evening at the event’s formal dinner. Richard found himself seated next to Henrik and despite the earlier debate, they managed to get along well. Will wisely, was seated at another table – probably for the best after such an energetic exchange!

The MTC event was a fantastic opportunity for Warren to engage with industry leaders, explore new ideas and strengthen our presence in the manufacturing and defence sectors. Events like these are essential in helping us stay at the forefront of innovation and sustainability – and of course, in ensuring that our voice is heard in the wider industry conversations.

We’re looking forward to turning these connections into opportunities and continuing to push boundaries in sustainable and high-tech manufacturing.

Leathes Prior’s Senior Partner Paul Warman announces retirement

Leathes Prior’s Senior Partner, Paul Warman, is set to retire as a Partner after 34 years of service at the firm on Monday 31 March 2025.

Paul joined Leathes Prior in 1991 before becoming a Partner in 1994 and has been a cornerstone in the growth of the firm’s Corporate and Commercial offering.  Specialising in corporate law himself, in particular the sale and purchase of private companies, MBO’s, company re-organisations, fundraising and joint ventures, he is well known for acting for a large number of local businesses, as well as national and international clients.

Paul stepped into the role of Senior Partner after the retirement of William Riley in 2022 and is known for his sharp legal mind, strategic insight, and, in particular, his scarf wearing. Paul has played a pivotal role in shaping the firm’s direction, mentoring countless colleagues, and championing the values that define Leathes Prior.

Though Paul is stepping down from his role as Senior Partner, we are delighted to announce that he will continue with us as a Consultant. In this capacity, he will share his extensive experience, provide strategic counsel, and support the development of our next generation of legal talent.

Partner Dan Chapman commented: “Paul’s contributions to Leathes Prior are immeasurable. His leadership, wisdom, and dedication have left an indelible mark on our firm. When Paul joined LP in 1991 the firm was largely a legal aid practice with little or no commercial and corporate presence – what he has managed to achieve during his tenure is nothing short of remarkable. He has not just achieved the creation and growth of a leading Corporate and Commercial Team, but has managed to play a prominent role in the growth of other related practice areas such as Employment and Commercial Property too, all of which has left the firm upon his retirement as a Partner in such a good place. We are incredibly grateful for his service and thrilled that he will remain part of our team as a Consultant.”

Paul shared his thoughts on this transition: “It has been an honour to serve as Senior Partner at Leathes Prior. I am deeply proud of what we have accomplished together and look forward to supporting the firm in my new role as Consultant. The future of Leathes Prior is bright, and I hope to have left Leathes Prior in a better place than when I first started.”

Please join us in congratulating Paul on his remarkable career and wishing him every success in this new chapter. We look forward to benefiting from your continued insight and guidance Paul.

With Paul retiring, Mike Barlow will become a senior partner at the firm. Mike joined Leathes Prior in 1995 before becoming a Partner in 2000 and was the firm’s Managing Partner for many years. Mike heads the firm’s Dispute Resolution Team, specialising in commercial and business disputes. Mike has extensive experience in acting for clients in complex High Court cases, commercial arbitrations, adjudications, and mediations.

Dutch Ambassador to the UK visits Norwich Research Park

On Friday 14 March, as part of a two-day visit to the East of England organised by Andrew Wood, Hon Dutch Consul for East Anglia with support from Norfolk County Council’s Inward Investment Team, Dutch Ambassador to the UK, Paul Huijts, visited scientists at some of the world-leading research institutes at Norwich Research Park.

After a networking lunch at which Nick Talbot, Executive Director and Group Leader of The Sainsbury Laboratory, provided the Ambassador with an overview of the park campus, Mr Huijts met with scientists at the leading edge of research into the role of the gut microbiome in pregnancy, decreasing the risk of urinary tract infections in Type 2 Diabetes patients and heart disease and bioactive compounds.

At the Quadram Institute, he was given a tour of the Clinical Research Facility with PhD student and principal investigator for the TESSA study, Julia Haarhuis. She outlined her research into preventing heart disease using bioactive compounds from a pomegranate extract.

Clinicians from the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital with scientists from the Quadram Institute talked the Ambassador through their collaborative research funded by the Quadram Institute Clinical Seedcorn Fund. Associate medical director for research, Professor Jon Lartey, and Dr Antonietta Hayhoe, head of human studies, explained their research on the role of the gut microbiome in pregnancy.

Prof Alison Mather, postdoctoral researcher Dr Samuel Bloomfield and consultant endocrinologist Dr Jason Cheung outlined their work on decreasing the risk of urinary tract infections in Type 2 diabetes patients.

Mr Huijts was also told about research being carried out by the University of East Anglia into how AI can be used to evaluate whether EU regulations actually support its citizens and the potential threats posed by technological developments in non-democratic states. AI4POL will bring together researchers from the fields of technology development, ethics, law, economics and political sciences, and partners include Tilburg University in the Netherlands.

Mr Huijts said: “It was a great two-day visit to Suffolk and Norfolk. East Anglia and the Dutch have many historical connections and those ties resonate today. From the connection of Norwich Airport with Schiphol to shared expertise and collaboration in domains as agriculture and health.”

The Netherlands is the biggest trading partner to Norfolk and Suffolk, and it is hoped the Ambassador’s extensive visit will strengthen direct links to Dutch investment teams and encourage partnership working following devolution with a focus on the areas covered in the visit.
