We’ll be broadcasting a series of interviews, which we’ll record at then event (you never know – you might be on air!) and our parent charity’s CEO, Daniel Childerhouse, will be telling you all about the Living Wage on the evening. It would be great to see you there!
Join us for a quick session about Design Sprints! Learn what they are and how they can change the way your business tackles challenges.Design Sprint – What’s It About? Got a business challenge? Who hasn’t! If the term design sprint is not one you’ve come across before, then sit back and let us pinpoint all the benefits of this wide-scope development process. The possibilities of what can be achieved during a 1-5-day sprint are endless! But here are the basics: A design sprint is a process typically 1-5 days long, which allows businesses or teams to address specific challenges and create actionable solutions quickly whilst reducing risk and gaining invaluable feedback. A sprint typically takes over a week, from selecting a challenge to a live interview and demonstration with an early adopter. Not every organisation needs or can allow a whole week to focus on a sprint, and as a result we’ve revised the sprint process to be delivered at a length that suits the organisation, from 1 day to 5 days! Who can attend?
Business leaders or teams who have an ongoing or upcoming business challenge
Anyone who wants to learn what a design sprint is and what it can do for their business
Here’s what some of the businesses who carry out our full Design Sprints have to say: “It was great to spend the day with the team at Hethel Innovation, who ran our design sprint in a relaxed and focused way. We left with far greater clarity on our value proposition and would recommend them to other developing companies” Encend IO.“The sprint process was very personalised and responsive to our needs, giving us time to engage with the most important topics. Facilitation was professional, and suggestions were constructive – would highly recommend for any business.” Please contact mcopsey@hethelinnovation.com if you have any questions about the webinar. Our 2012 theme of Unlocking Growth got off to a fantastic start on 2 December with our Business Conference, at OPEN, in Norwich. The event was attended by nearly 200 delegates and we were delighted to welcome Dr Vince Cable MP as keynote speaker.
His presence at the event highlighted that Unlocking Growth is a key part of the Government’s agenda, and that engaging with the Norfolk business community as a whole is vital part of getting the UK back on its economic feet.
Conference highlightsDr Vince Cable – He acknowledged the opportunities that exist for Norfolk businesses, particularly within life sciences, energy and the creative sector. We took the opportunity to drive home to him the importance of Norfolk as a business community and that businesses need to be treated according to their size, rather than a ‘one size fits all’ solution, in matters such as employment law.
British Chamber of Commerce – President Martyn Pellew and Director of Policy Adam Marshall were very positive about how the British Chambers and Norfolk can work together to bring about growth. Adam asked how many people in the audience were positive about 2012 and there was an overwhelming show of hands.
Andy Wood – CEO of Adnams and Chair of New Anglia LEP talked about what Norfolk and the LEP has achieved in 2011, particularly the Regional Growth Fund, Enterprise Zone and Green Pathfinder.
David McNally – CEO of Norwich City Football Club focused on recruitment, underlining that employers need to assess candidates’ overall offering of experience, skills and attitude when recruiting. He also said that we need to exceed customer expectations when delivering service.
Johnny Hustler – Director of Archant Anglia, presented his thoughts on technology. He said we need to embrace new ideas and new methods of communication and marketing into the way we do businesses, and accept that they are an inevitable part of change and positive growth.
Davina Tanner – The General Manager of Chapelfield encouraged businesses to work more closely with the community and presented a film on the work Chapelfield is doing to reduce the prison population by giving work, and hope, to ex-offenders.
Old heads, young shoulders – the conference ended with an interview with two young entrepreneurs, Ben Farrin and Keiran Miles. These two young men have shown extraordinary initiative and drive to achieve remarkable business success at a very young age. They were incredibly positive and enthusiastic about the future and effectively summed up the tone of the conference. An inspiration to us all!
Event host Matthew Hudson – Business Reporter, ITV Anglia. A big thank you to Matthew, whose superb presenting skills and experience ensured that the conference ran smoothly and professionally.
Caroline Williams, CEO of Norfolk Chamber, commented on the conference: “The conference was a complete success and showed that Norfolk is determined that the current economic situation will not curb their ambition or desire to grow. Norfolk has fantastic opportunities, but businesses need to work together to ensure every chance is maximised. The Chamber is dedicated to working with Norfolk business to ensure this happens.”
Brand. Done well, it encapsulates the vision and values of a firm – it supports the culture, creating expectations both within and outside the organisation.
82% of brand-led businesses outperform their competitors (source: Booz Allen Hamilton & Wolff Olins 2005). To find out how they do it, why not join us to hear from speakers who have created successful brand-led businesses. See how building a brand that becomes everything a client sees, hears and touches can create richer and more valuable relationships.
By the end of the session, you will have a clearer idea of what it means to be brand-led, and an appreciation that it is not the only route to success.
A very inspirational talk from Simon Altham @Hoseasons this morning at the @norfolkchamber breakfast meeting #ChamberNetworking” @fouragency
On a beautiful sunny Norfolk morning, nearly 70 delegates joined the Chamber and guest speaker Simon Altham, Managing Director of Hoseasons to discuss why Norfolk is an incredible place to centre your business. Simon spoke about how from humble origins, Hoseasons have built up a formidable local, national and international reputation, all based very locally, just over the border. He also stressed the importance of East Anglia working together to achieve the goals so important to collective Norfolk businesses.
Even after becoming part of the American brand Wyndham Worldwide, Simon explained that Norfolk was the obvious choice for their newest TV campaign. He listed four main reasons for this choice; the economy; heritage; quality and range of offering and the support of local businesses. He described Norfolk as a year-round destination with an ‘array of great experiences’ and how using Norfolk’s natural beauty and selling points made it the perfect choice for their advert. The ability to use local businesses and contractors also appealed to this local company who have based in the area for over 60 years.
We also heard from our chosen event charity CLIC Sargent. Alison Ramsay, Fundraising Manager, spoke about the work the Charity does for children who have been diagnosed with cancer and the support the Charity provides to their families. Fiona talked specifically about what local viewers were interested in citing that over 40% were most interested in local events, local crime and infrastructure. Through a series of local partnerships and community programming slots Mustard TV aims to offer opportunities to Norfolk Businesses to engage with their area and develop a potential audience of over 200,000.
“Interesting and informative network session. Good to meet other local businesses and learn about developments in our local community” – Sophie Simpson, DeVere Dunston Hall

Sandra Flangan, Deputy CEO & Personalisation Lead at Norwich and Central Norfolk Mind reminded us of the importance of taking care of your employees’ mental health, explaining that 1 in 4 of us will suffer from work related mental health issues such as stress or depression in the next 12 months.

This HR Forum will focus on the details of a careful and thorough investigation into grievances, harassment complaints, disciplinary and capability issues. It is the foundation on which defences in Tribunal proceedings will stand or fall and it is at the heart of ensuring fairness for all employees. Employers wishing to reduce risk, create and maintain a positive workplace culture and foster confidence in management need to have experienced and trained manager investigators available at short notice to conduct workplace investigations as the need arises.
Birketts will look at the ‘secrets’ of a good investigation and how this can reduce financial and reputation risks to the organisation whilst ensuring that the reports produced stand up to the scrutiny of potential legal proceedings.
