We are proud to present the next event in the BCC’s prestigious Leadership Programme. Philip Hammond, former Chancellor of the Exchequer and Foreign Secretary, will be joining us to share his thoughts on the current economic climate and how to drive the economy forward.
This fascinating conversation with Dr Adam Marshall, Director General of the BCC, will address the challenges faced by UK business as a result of one of the biggest economic crises of our time, and new ways we will interact and trade with the rest of the world after the end of the EU Transition period.
Discussions will reflect on what policy interventions are needed to weather this unprecedented economic storm. They will explore a potential road to the recovery of future resilience and sustainability in businesses, discussing innovation and new technologies as drivers for enhanced productivity, new skills and jobs and a stronger economy.
Philip Hammond
Philip Hammond has had a distinguished career in British politics as a Member of Parliament from 1997 to 2019. He held a range of Senior cabinet posts, most recently serving as Chancellor of the Exchequer from 2016 to 2019. Prior to this, he served as Foreign Secretary (2014-2016), Defence Secretary (2011- 2014) and Transport Secretary (2010-2011).
Before entering Parliament in 1997, Philip had a wide-ranging business career spanning the house-building and property, healthcare equipment and oil and gas sectors.
As Chancellor of the Exchequer, Philip focussed on the long-term productivity challenges facing the UK economy and was a strong advocate for the Financial Services sector, and especially for the fast-growing Fintech sector. He championed the cause of SMEs and the need for greater access to long-term growth capital to allow successful British start-ups to scale up in the UK, rather than seeking capital overseas.

The Government has estimated 100,000 otherwise viable businesses close annually simply because no-one wants to take them on. With 10% of SMEs based in the East, this suggests it is a fate that faces around 10,000 businesses in our region each year.
This session will start by looking at what sets those firms that do successfully navigate a change of ownership apart from those that fail. We will explore why profit and value, while linked, are different and discuss ways of increasing the value of your business.
You should leave the session with a deeper understanding of business valuations, a clearer view of how to create a valuable business, along with some practical first steps.
