Norwich Business Breakfast – Media Opportunities, and making the Most of Them!
On the longest day of the year, 50 delegates decided to make the most of it by starting early at another Norwich Business Breakfast, at Norwich City Football Club presented by Norfolk Chamber. The Top of The Terrace suite was filled with the smell of a full English breakfast and the buzz of networking before Tim Williams, Managing Editor of Archant, Norfolk took to the floor to speak about how businesses can get the best from media opportunities to increase their profile.
Tim explained how to get the best results when approaching the media, what journalists want from you to get your story out there, some great do’s and dont’s and advice on what makes something newsworthy. Tim commented that he meets people all the time who have great stories to tell but they are not getting the message across to the media.
With the presentation over, Tim opened up the chance for the delegates to ask some questions. With some wanting to find specific ways to get to the right journalist, what challenges were the media, Archant in particular, facing with the rapid rate of digital mediums to what Tim thought of the whole Levenson enquiry. Tim rounded off by saying he would like to see a “vibrant free media, with news and information presented in a professional manner”.
“This breakfast has been brilliant, and I’ve met some really interesting people.” – Tim Williams
We also heard from our chosen event charity Macmillan Cancer Support. Nathalie Marshall, Fundraising Manager for Norfolk reminded us of the amount of people who are dealing with cancer in the UK every day, using the backdrop of the empty Canaries ground behind her to emphasise the fact that the number would fill the ground 4 times over. Finishing with a call to action from the delegates and their business, Nathalie asked them to get involved with the charity and reminding us all of the Macmillan coffee morning on September 27th.
As well as hearing from Tim and Nathalie, our 60 second speaker was Bob Prior from Heritage Contract Services. Bob took full advantage of the minute to tell those present more about what they do and what they can offer.
The event closed with delegates mixing and mingling with some safari networking, with opportunities to be ‘Well Connected’ with other local businesses.
The next Norwich Business Breakfast (with the Chambers AGM after) will take place on 11th October at Norwich City Football Club. To book your place click here

Following on from 2012’s sell-out event, Look the Business was back in September with another successful sell-out event. Delegates got the chance to learn the key 4 trends for the Autumn season and why John Lewis has been commended for high quality customer service.
Isabel Macdonald, Head or Branch for John Lewis, Norwich started by saying “there is no quick fix to perfect customer service or else we would all be doing it.” She went on to show a video from The Royal Family with the quote ‘if you were to wet yourself anywhere, you’d want to wet yourself in John Lewis’. She went onto explain that this is not exactly the comment they were aiming for but that this comment is key; it’s all about how your customers perceive your business not how you think customers perceive your business.
The delegates were then treated to two tutorials from the Clarins Team; a makeup tutorial for the women and a skincare tutorial for the men. Following on from this, the fashion team at John Lewis gave the delegates the chance learn how to dress four of this seasons trends, Moody Blooms, Boy Meets Girl, The New Rebel & Femme Fatale. These outfits were all modelled beautifully by apprentices from our members as this year the Chamber’s theme for 2013 is ‘Unlocking the Potential of Norfolk’s Young People’.
The delegates then had the chance to put all this knowledge into practice with an hour of shopping and networking time.

Delegates commented on the great atmosphere and the event went above and beyond, exceeding expectations. Andy Gillies, Gillies Associates said ‘it was relaxed, friendly and great to network in a relaxed atmosphere. I thoroughly enjoyed it.’
The morning started off with the ‘Name that Christmas Tune’ icebreaker which proved great fun and brought out the competitiveness of delegates. Breakfast followed and delegates took full advantage of the networking opportunity.

On Friday 9 May over 80 Norfolk & Cambridgeshire Chamber Members attended our standing room only business breakfast to get the unique opportunity to network with neighbouring chamber members. Delegates heard from the two Local Enterprise Partnership’s that border West Norfolk and King’s Lynn & West Norfolk Borough Council.
The breakfast took place in the Great Barn at Knights Hill Hotel with our host for the morning, Norfolk Chamber President, Ian Hacon taking the delegates through the agenda. Ian introduced our event featured charity, King’s Lynn Festival, who told us about how the festival helps King’s Lynn and how support of their events is crucial.
The breakfast was buzzing with conversation as the cross-county networking started with one or our trademark ice breaker activities, guess my CV. Networking continued over breakfast and our safari networking got the delegates to take a seat at a new table and meet new people, making even more connections.
It was then time to hear from our panel of three keynote speakers; Chris Starkie, New Anglia LEP, Graham Nix, Greater Cambridge Greater Peterborough LEP& Cllr Nick Daubney, Borough Council of King’s Lynn & West Norfolk about the progress they have made locally in the past year and their aims for the next 12 months.
Chris Starkie said “New Anglia LEP are aiming to have 95,000 more jobs by 2026”
Grahame Nix highlighted GCGP’s “Growing Places fund £500k in 12 £30k grants to charity – employment that are available to West Norfolk.”
Watch out for the Borough Council of King’s Lynn & West Norfolk “local investment board” that will be with us soon.
A Q&A session then took place with various questions from delegates to better understand the opportunities and funding that are open to them as a business and how they can influence their LEPs plans for the coming year.
Delegates had a lot of positive things to talk about on twitter;
Chaplin Farrant
“Great morning @norfolkchamber breakfast in Kings Lynn this morning – many thanks. #wellconnected”
Independence Matters
“At kings lynn @norfolkchamber#wellconnected event – first time and getting connected with some great future contacts!”
